Traditional Astrology: Polarity (Gender)

The twelve zodiac signs are informed by three components: polarity, modality, and element. These components give meaning to the signs as they dictate their behavior and area of focus. Unfortunately, modern astrology or pop astrology tends to introduce the signs in a way that is distanced from these foundational components, which de-emphasizes the incredibly tight symmetry and alignment of the zodiac signs.

The largest divider of the twelve signs is polarity, which separates the signs into odd or even numbering. The odd numbers are assigned the masculine polarity and the even numbers are assigned the feminine polarity. Note that “masculine” and “feminine” pertain solely to energetic patterns and are not limited to maleness or femaleness. If these terms seem too loaded, the terms “yang” and “yin” serve as excellent substitutes as they imply very similar energetic behavior while being a bit more removed from gender. Still, it is important to note that Classic Western thought uses masculine and feminine in a way that is different from Chinese metaphysical systems; “yin” and “yang” are dynamic complements meaning they are in constant flux and transform into each other. The Greek concept of masculine and feminine energies exist as fixed opposites.

Odd Numbered Signs as Masculine

The odd numbered signs are assigned the masculine polarity because they reflect the concept of the Monad. The Monad (1) is the original source of everything in existence and the seed of life. It is the perpetuator of form. From the Monad, all other numbers are created through addition or multiplication. From this, we extract the concept of the odd numbers creating and initiating form.

Odd numbers cannot be perfectly divided, as one portion would always be greater than the other (the Greek system did not use decimals and numbers were not merely quantities; they were treated as metaphysical concepts). This gives odd numbers a sense of wholeness and unity. They act in a generative manner and shape form.

Even Numbered Signs as Feminine

The even numbered signs are assigned the feminine polarity because they reflect the concept of the Dyad. The Dyad (2) is the first division of unity which creates multiplicity, duality, otherness, and potential. The Dyad is receptive and yields to the force of the Monad. Like the Dyad, even numbers hold and contain shape. They are able to receive, absorb, and generate new variations and proliferations.

Even numbers can be perfectly divided, which gives them a reflective quality. Their division creates a receptive opening, unlike odd numbers which can only divide into a generative and receptive portion.

Odd Numbers as Masculine Elements

We will discuss the elements more deeply in a future post, but the understanding of the numbers is incomplete without mentioning the elements. Odd numbers and therefore masculine signs are always of the masculine elements (fire, air). Both fire and air disperse and shape form and cannot be shaped themselves. Fire initiates with a spark and air initiates with movement. Both elements generate momentum, energy, and direction; fire radiates upwards and air circulates. Both elements create change without being changed themselves. This behavior aligns with the odd numbered, masculine polarity.

Even Numbers as Feminine Elements

Even numbers and therefore feminine signs are always of the feminine elements (water, earth). Both water and earth absorb and receive form; they can be shaped and act as mediums. Both water and earth exist as containers that embody substance and allow essence to manifest as matter. Water and earth are both downward moving in momentum, meaning they naturally pool or compact at the deepest or lowest points. This allows them to embody stillness, which is opposite of the masculine elements’ constant mobility.

Modality and Elements: Quaternities and Triplicities

By using polarity, we have split the zodiac signs into 2 categories, and in the next posts, we’ll explore modalities, which split the signs into 3 modes. We’ll also further explore the elements which divide the signs into 4 elements. As you can see, numbers are extremely layered and reinforced in astrology; understanding these components is crucial to appreciating the beautiful symmetry and balance of the traditional system.
